Bonus Online Marketing Mistake to Avoid for Entrepreneurs

Thinking “I Have To Do Everything”

I listen to a lot of podcasts on marketing.

And, in most episodes there is at least 1 really good idea of something I think; “I should be doing that.”.

And, truth be told, I use to try a lot of the things I heard.

The issue is, my results were NEVER close to what the podcast interviewee had.

Then, I started to apply my favorite leadership axiom, “the principle behind the practice.”

As it turns out, all the great things I kept hearing people do fell into one of three categories.

  1. Getting more of the right traffic to their website or landing page.
  2. Capturing contact information of the people visiting the website or landing page.
  3. Following up with this list strategically and intentionally.

That’s it; traffic, lead generation, and conversion.

With this realization, I now ask questions about every “golden” idea I hear about.

  1. Which of the three phases of online marketing does this fall into?
  2. What did this person do in the other two phases?
  3. Why did this “what” work?

After, and only after, I know the answer to those three questions am I able to contextualize the idea into my online marketing strategy…or the online marketing strategy of one of my clients.

So, what can you do.

Pick just ONE thing from each phase of online marketing to focus on.

  • Just ONE way to drive more traffic.  This might be pay-per-click ads, social media ads, content promotion based on an SEO strategy.
  • Just ONE way to capture leads.  Offer a webinar, a free eBook, a consult, etc.
  • Just ONE way to convert those leads into customers.  Sales calls, email campaigns, retargeting, etc.

Once, and ONLY once, you have mastered your ONE thing do you add something new.

In my experience, you need to focus for at least 1 year on just one thing in each phase.

Let me know if you have any questions.
